American harpsichordist and fortepianist Robert Hill is Professor of historical keyboards and historical performance practice at the Freiburg University of Music in Freiburg, Germany. He studied harpsichord with Gustave Leonhardt at the Sweelink Conservatorium in Amsterdam (Soloist Diploma 1974). In 1987, Robert Hill was awarded the Ph D in Music History at Harvard University/ Cambridge, USA for his dissertation on the early keyboard music of J. S. Bach. From 1986-1990, he was Assistant Professor for Musicology and Performance Practice at Duke University, and he has been at the Freiburg University of Music since 1990. With a large catalog of recordings on harpsichord, fortepiano, clavichord and lute-harpsichord, Robert Hill has established himself as one of his generation's leading specialists for historical keyboard playing. His recordings (for Deutsche Grammophon, Hänssler Classics, Naxos, mdg, cpo, Music & Arts, Ars Musici and other companys) have received awards and critical acclaim. He also maintains a YouTube channel featuring his live performances. As a musicologist, Robert Hill's central area of focus has been late-Romantic performance practice, in particular the analysis of early 20th-century recorded performances.
