Ludus Instrumentalis

Ludus Instrumentalis is an international ensemble founded in 2014 in Saint Petersburg and later relocated to Cologne, Germany in 2015. The group is devoted to historically informed performance, specializing in music from the Baroque and Classical periods, with a particular interest in rediscovering forgotten composers and the repertoire of the Russian Imperial court.

The ensemble’s core members include baroque violinists Evgeny Sviridov and Anna Dmitrieva, cellist Davit Melkonyan, harpsichordist Stanislav Gres, violist Corina Golomoz, and lutenist/theorbist Liza Solovey. Together, they bring deep scholarly insight and expressive musicality to their interpretations, performing exclusively on period instruments.

Ludus Instrumentalis has won several prestigious international competitions, including:

  • 1st Prize at the Berliner Bach Competition (2015),
  • 1st Prize and Audience Prize at the Förderpreis Alte Musik Saarland (2016),
  • 1st Prize at the International Brothers-Graun Competition in Bad Liebenwerda (2016).

The ensemble has appeared at leading early music festivals across Europe, including Bachfest Leipzig, Köthener Bachfesttage, Festival Oude Muziek Utrecht, Festival Bruges, Sanssouci Potsdam, and Festival Haut-Jura in France. In 2018, they served as ensemble-in-residence at Schloss Rheinsberg, the former court of Frederick the Great.

Their concert highlights include performances at:

  • Zamus Early Music Festival Cologne, with a string quartett of Haydn’s Seven Last Words of Christ (2025, recorded by Deutschlandfunk), in collaboration with Andreas Staier at Fortepiano,
  • Forum Alte Musik Köln, featuring works by Bach and Goldberg (2024),
  • Musikinstrumenten-Museum Berlin, presenting a baroque trio sonata program (2023).

Ludus Instrumentalis is also active in recording and broadcasting projects. Their 2020 CD featuring Goldberg Trio Sonatas was co-produced with WDR, and in 2023, they collaborated with Deutschlandfunk and WDR on a recording of music by Franz Benda. Their programming is often bold and imaginative, such as their 2020 concert with countertenor Valer Sabadus, which included a baroque arrangement of a Led Zeppelin song.

With a mission to unite historical precision with artistic vitality, Ludus Instrumentalis continues to engage audiences across Europe through its unique repertoire, refined sound, and vivid performances.
