Roland Wilson
Roland Wilson initiallystudied the trumpet at the Royal College of Music in London. His interest in 16th and 17th century music lead him to take up the cornetto and study at the Royal Conservatory in Den Haag and was a frequent gast with leading ensembles before concentrating his activities on directing Musica Fiata and La Capella Ducale including the necessary research on historical performance practice and editions of hitherto unknown music. His performances are noted for combining the historical with artistic inspiration. His intimate knowledge of the music has enabled him to reconstruct partially surviving works by Gabrieli, Biber, Schütz and Scheidt and Buxtehude. Apart from which he makes reconstructions of historical cornetti.
Musica Fiata
Musica Fiata was founded in 1976 as an ensemble specializing in the performance of 16th and 17th century music on historical instruments.An intensive study of performance-practice sources,playing techniques and original instruments of the period has enabled the group to develop a a speech-based musical style and a distinctive sound ,which lends a transparency to the most dense textures.
La Capella Ducale
The vocal-ensemble La Capella Ducale was founded in 1992 by Roland Wilson in order to match the sound and style of Musica Fiata.The exact disposition varies according to the historical requirements of the repertoire,ranging from a few soloists to a small choir.
Critics have unanimously acclaimed the outstanding performances for combining individual virtuosity and individuality within an ensemble,which blends perfectly with the instrumental-sound of Musica Fiata.The success of their first CD for Sony with music from Monteverd’s Selva Morale immediately resulted in invitations to festivals all over Europe;
Since then over 30 CDs have been released mainly with 17th century music but also CDs with music from Lasso to Vivaldi for Sony Classical,Deutsche Harmonia Mundi and CPO- The „Lubecker Abendmusik“ was praised by one critic as „ the best recording of Buxtehude’s sacred music ever made“. The Vivaldi Vespro per la Vergine recording was praised in International Record Review “ This is simply the most successful Vivaldi choral recording I have ever heard“.
Musica Fiata and La Capella Ducale have performed at festivals in Wroclaw, Swidnica and Krakau. Their performance in 2017 of of the Reformation Mass by Schütz and Praetorius for the Festival „Song of our Roots“ Jaroslaw was broadacst not only in Poland but in many countries throughout Europe.
